Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor

E-mail Print PDF

windowsMicrosoft has released a helpful tool if you are considering an upgrade to Windows 7 on an existing computer (which you should if your computer is reasonably new). It is the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor. You download this this small program, install and run it. Simply put, this program scans your computer and tells you how ready your PC is for the upgrade to Windows 7. It checks your hardware as well as providing compatibility information for the software you are running. Download the Windows 7 upgrade advisor.

I downloaded and ran the upgrade advisor on my tablet PC. If you wish to see the details that the report provides, follow the "Read More" link below to view the entire upgrade report.

Awesome Free Tool to Clean up Your Computer

ccleanerThis tool has been around for a while, but I really wanted to take a minute to point out how great this tool is. CCleaner is a free tool for personal use and has served me well over the past few years. It is a small download, installs quickly, and can do a lot to clean up a messy Windows PC. The program can cleanup temporary files on your system from including Internet Explorer, Windows, and other programs. CCleaner does a great job at cleaning up your registry (but allow it to make a backup, just in case) and fixing issues with previously uninstalled programs. This tool can also be used to remove stubborn programs and delete pesky startup items that plague your system and hog memory. CCleaner is an all around great tool and, in addition to Virus/Spyware removal, should definitely be considered as one of your first steps to troubleshooting a slow running PC. You can more about CCleaner and download the program for free here.

Windows 7 Upgrade Hangs at 62%

E-mail Print PDF

Personally I did a fresh install of Windows 7 on two of my laptops and had no problems, but it sounds like many people are taking the upgrade route. I can't say I blame them as this is generally the "easier" route to go. However for some people this may not be the case. There have been several reports from users that their Vista to 7 upgrade hangs at 62%. If you are experiencing this issue where your Windows 7 upgrade is locking up at specifically 62%, then there may be hope. Apparently this lockup is caused by the Iphlpsvc service (or possibly another service) stops responding during the upgrade. Microsoft has published a support article to help you resolve the issue, see it here. They have provided detailed steps on how to solve the issue, and even a "Microsoft Fix It" that you can download to automatically fix it. Hope this helps anyone having this issue!
